Making Citizen Development Real in Regulated Firms

A practical playbook for alternative asset managers and financial services firms on letting non-technical teams build and deploy with AI while keeping risk, compliance, and security intact.

Your analysts, associates, and operations leads are already building applications with AI, and most of your firm's controls were never designed for that.

Why this conversation matters

Citizen development is no longer a pilot. AI tools now let people with no engineering background build working applications in an afternoon. In asset management, that creates a distinct problem. Your internal processes are complex, your external-facing technology is limited, and your data is among the most sensitive in the market. Playbooks written for SaaS and fintech companies do not fit your risk profile.

This session shows you how to set the boundaries, controls, and operating model that make citizen development safe enough to scale.

Key takeaways

  • Decide who can build, and for whom. Learn a tiered model that separates personal-use tools, team tools, and firm-wide applications, with clear criteria for when a tool moves up a tier.
  • Put governance in place that holds up. See the minimum controls to require: an app inventory, data access rules, review gates, security checks, audit trails, and retirement of unused tools.
  • Adapt the playbook to asset management. Understand why internal workflows, investor data, and deal information shift where the risk sits, and how to adjust your approach.
  • Spread good workflows through champions, not mandates. Hear how internal champions, a culture of experimentation, and AI embedded in the systems your teams already use help useful tools spread across a firm.
  • Test the controls you already have. Use a short checklist to find gaps in your current policies before a regulator, auditor, or incident does.
  • Leave with a 90-day starting plan. Walk away with concrete next steps for your technology, risk, and business leaders.

This session is built for leaders at alternative asset managers, private equity and credit firms, hedge funds, and other regulated financial services firms, including:
